What is Radio Telephony Restricted (Aeronautical)?

The RTR(A) license is issued by the Wireless Planning and Coordination (WPC) Division of India’s Ministry of Communications. It is a mandatory certification for pilots in India to operate radios in aircraft. To obtain the RTR(A) license, candidates must pass an examination that consists of two parts.

• Part 1: Practical transmission exam (Regulations and Procedures)

• Part 2: Oral (Viva) exam on Radio Principles & Practices and Regulations.

Exam Structure:
• Practical Examination (Transmission): This 25-minute test assesses your
transmission techniques based on radio regulations and procedures. Once you qualify this, you move to the next phase.

• Oral Examination (Viva): In this stage, the Chief Examiner from the WPC, along with a representative from DGCA or AAI, will test your understanding of radio principles, regulations, and procedures.
